Volunteer Week

Celebrating Our Volunteers

We had a fantastic week celebrating our volunteers for National Volunteer Week. Over 120 people attended our breakfasts throughout Perth.

I love it! I’ve been volunteering for 12 years.

They’re all lovely people. I get more out of it than what they do. Just being there to help them in lots of areas. Their loved ones don’t have to worry when they are with us.

Volunteer Week

Volunteers were given a hand painted pot plant designed by the creative people at Rise’s Arts Hub.

Volunteer Week

Greg designed Rise’s Thank You cards. He’s been attending the Arts Hub for 21 years and he’s a mad Fremantle Dockers fan!

Thanks to Volunteering WA and Lotterywest for their generous support of our breakfast events throughout Perth.

Celebrating Volunteers Rise Photo Shoot

Celebrating people photo shoot

Rise’s first “Celebrating People” book was published in 2016. It is now an annual tradition. An opportunity to share the stories of the people we support, our volunteers and our staff.

We received lots of suggestions of inspiring people to include in this year’s book and recently wrapped up the first day’s shoot for 2019.

Starting at the Peter Anderton social centre we photographed some of the humble volunteers who give so much of their time to support their community. These volunteers shared some fascinating stories about their backgrounds and passion for supporting people.

At Centenary house, we listened to some of our older Australians share their knowledge and life experience. The Aboriginal Elders showcased some of their beautiful artwork for our cameras.

We visited the Bounce group and heard about their sports activities and other programs to increase community belonging and socialisation.

Finally, the young crew who live in Ellenbrook invited us into their home to capture some images as they went about their daily activities.

We captured some magical moments and met some amazing people. We are now busy collating and putting together their stories for the third Celebrating People Book.

In the meantime, copies of last year’s book are available from Helen’s Place at 12 Leslie Road, Middle Swan. You also can read regular stories on our blog.

Rise provides services for the aged, youth, people with a disability and those facing mental health challenges. For more information visit our homepage.

Mary Kenney - volunteer

Special volunteering milestone celebrated

Rise presented Mary Kenney with a 20 years service pin this week to commemorate her many years of volunteering.

Celebrating volunteers

We love to celebrate our volunteers!

Volunteers play a huge role at Rise and always have done. This week’s International Volunteer Day provides a great time to acknowledge and celebrate our Rise volunteers at a range of events held across the metro area.

Special volunteering milestone

As a part of Rise’s celebrations we acknowledged a very special volunteer – Mary Kenney.

Mary has been volunteering at Rise for 20 years!

Rise Program Manager Debbie Armstead presented Mary with some lovely flowers, a 20 year service pin and some vouchers to thank her for her years of service.

Mary has been a great support to both our staff and our members at Wahroonga, one of Rise’s aged care social centres.

Mary said

I love volunteering, it makes me feel good that I’ve helped out in some way.

Mary is always happy to help in any way that is asked of her – and she does it with a lovely smile on her face.

Why not join Mary?

Are you interested in volunteering?

We need and appreciate people with all different kinds of gifts, abilities and passions.

You can do anything from driving our minibuses so people we support can enjoy days out, taking clients to medical appointments, supporting a person with a disability at one of our supported houses, or simply offering companionship at our social centres

There are heaps of volunteer opportunities at Rise so there is bound to be something that suits you!

volunteers marriage

Rise volunteers celebrate marriage

Rise has celebrated two of our volunteers with a special morning tea to celebrate their marriage!

Roger and Mary recently married and had a short break over east.

Upon their return we had a small celebration to wish them well.

Volunteers celebrate marriage

Roger and Mary met 17 years ago while volunteering for their local Lions club.

They then continued their generous work by coming to volunteer together at Rise.

They’ve given their time to us for the past six years.

Unfortunately Roger was quite ill over the past 12 months and there were grave concerns for his health.

Realising that life was too short, Roger asked Mary to be his wife.

And of course she said yes!

The pair had an intimate wedding and a nice break in Sydney.

Rise celebrates

Recently Rise held a morning tea to officially wish them well.

Volunteer Coordinator organised the morning at our social centre in Koongamia.

She said the pair were worthy of a little fuss given their generous spirits.

There was a special cake and a few short speeches. One of our guests also sang some beautiful songs!

Mary thanked Rise for the morning

We like to be the givers, not the takers. But thank you for making a fuss!

What a beautiful couple – we wish you all the health and happiness in the world!

Rise volunteer driver Fran

Fran encourages volunteers to join Rise and make a difference

Rise volunteer driver Fran is encouraging others to get on board!

Fran encourages volunteers

Fran helps to take Rise aged care clients to appointments several times a week. She has been volunteering at Rise for more than a decade!

Being a volunteer driver makes me feel useful. I know how frustrating it is to give up your license and feel stranded  – I went through this with my mum and I know how she felt, and I’ve heard so many other people express this too.

I’m pleased that this driving service is available because it helps people to maintain some independence and remain at home..

Rise seeking volunteers

Rise is currently seeking volunteer drivers in the Perth Hills. You can assist taking people to medical or other appointments.

Fran said as well as being rewarding, it did not leave her out of pocket.

I’m on a pension, so before we decided to commit to volunteering we had to work out if it would leave us out of pocket.

With the travel allowance we worked out that it was enough to cover fuel, tyres and maintenance costs associated with volunteering.

A  bonus is that this allowance does not have to be declared on tax. There is also an option to use a pool car too.

With volunteering you can do as much or as little as you like. You simply list your availability and they will ask if drivers are needed. It’s also up to you how far you want to drive.

National Volunteer Week 2018

Rise celebrates National Volunteer Week 2018

Rise has celebrated National Volunteer Week 2018 in style – with plenty of events and celebrations.

National Volunteer Week 2018

National Volunteer Week 2018 ran from 21-27th May 2018. It was a great opportunity for Rise to acknowledge the 200 people who donate their time to us!

Volunteers could choose to attend one of four breakfast events across Perth.

The events were in Mundaring, Forrestfield, Warwick and Armadale. Volunteers enjoyed a delicious breakfast. We also held a door prize raffle, with lots of volunteers winning warm winter blankets.

Volunteer Awards

A small team from Rise attended the WA Volunteer of the Year Awards Presentation by Volunteering WA.

The awards were held at the Hyatt Regency. One our volunteers Gary Heatly was up for the WA People’s Choice award. Gary entertains at our social centre in Armadale, singing old hits to our guests.

He attended the awards with his mate Nick, who volunteers on a Friday with Gary.

Volunteer Coordinator Lisa Begley said it was a brilliant evening.

It was a really fun night and a superb evening for celebrating all of the fabulous volunteers – not just with Rise but the state.

The Governor Kim Beazley and Minister Michael Murray were there and had some lovely words to say about volunteers and the value they provide to WA.

Unfortunately Gary did not walk away with the award. However, he was presented with a lovely certificate!

Jess volunteers

Jess loves volunteering and meeting new people

Every week, Jess generously donates her time by volunteering at Rise.

She has a busy weekly schedule – including working in a op shop, going horse riding and catching up with friends.

So we are lucky to have her smiling face around!

Jess loves volunteering

Volunteer coordinator Lisa Begley said Jess is a unique volunteer because she has support with her.

When Jess was in high school her mum approached us to see if there were any positions available.

It formed part of her high school curriculum to volunteer.

Jess is an absolute delight and continues to volunteer, even though she has now finished school.

She loves to attend our volunteer events.

Jess’ support worker Annette said the pair delivered meals to people in the Armadale area each week.

Jess loves volunteering and loves delivering meals – it’s her favourite day of the week! We’ve been delivering for around a year and a half. She loves meeting new people.

We love Jess’s community spirit! She was also a good sport and recently took part in a photo shoot. It was for our Celebrating People Book 2016-2017.

This coffee table book contains stories from our staff, volunteers and clients. The stories are from across the whole organisation. You can get a copy at our head office – 12 Leslie Road Middle Swan.

pablo volunteers gardening

Pablo volunteers for Rise – in the garden!

At Rise, there are all sort of opportunities for people who would like to volunteer with us!

Take Pablo.

Pablo volunteers in the garden at our social centre in Armadale. Originally from Colombia, he brings a bright, happy attitude with him to Rise.

Pablo volunteers

Rise Volunteer Coordinator Lisa said Pablo did a great job on the large property. He helps with the lawns, edging and pruning!

Pablo has been volunteering in our garden for a while now. He is keen to be involved in every available opportunity.

He is a very patient, positive person who always looks on the bright side of life. Pablo tells me is very thankful for all that we have done to support him and we are equally thankful to him for all of his support over the years.

There are nearly 200 volunteers here at Rise, and Pablo is one of them! He was recently in our Celebrating People Book 2016-2017.

volunteers Rise

Rise celebrates our valued volunteers

Rise has been celebrating our valued volunteers with several events.

Last week marked International Volunteer Day.

Valued volunteers

Rise has more than 180 volunteers all over the Perth metropolitan area.

These volunteers help with driving, meal delivery, arts, events and more!

To celebrate them, we held four breakfast events.

Volunteer Coordinator Lisa Begley said it was nice to give back our volunteers.

Our volunteers are so selfless in giving up their time to help others. This is a just a small token of our thanks for all that they do.

We had breakfasts in Armadale, Warwick, Mundaring and Forrestfield and more than 100 volunteers came along. It’s a really nice social outing too and a chance for people to connect.

valued volunteers

International Volunteer Day

Volunteers around the world are celebrated on 5th December. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985.

In WA, the keynote event to mark the day was run by Volunteering WA. More than 25 volunteers from Rise attended the Garden Party at Government House. It was a fancy affair to recognise the great work of volunteers from all over the state!

Lisa said it was a great afternoon out

A few of our volunteers met the Governor General which was very exciting for them.
