You may have noticed the Rainbows everywhere? That’s because it is International Pride Month!
Every year, across the globe, the LGBTIQA+ community celebrates as a way of recognising the influence LGBTIQA+ people have had around the world. Why was June chosen? Because it is when the Stonewall Riots took place, way back in 1969 in New York City.
As well as being a month of celebration, Pride month is also an opportunity to peacefully protest and raise political awareness of current issues facing the community. Things have improved for LGBTIQA+ Australians, but for many others living in different countries, their rights have been reduced and discrimination has increased. Parades are a prominent feature of Pride month, as well as, community events, street festivals and educational sessions.
Perth Pride Month is celebrated in November 2021 and we, at Rise, are going to party!! Perth Pride will give us all an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the local LGBTIGQ+ experience and celebrate as a group. Stay tuned for more information soon.
